The rents are out of control. Believe it or not, in 1997 when I lived in LA, the rent I paid for a walk-in closet where I shared a bathroom & kitchen with another guy, was more than I pay now, 22 years later, in upstate NY, and I currently share with no one.
I then ended up on LA's infamous skid row, until I bought a bus ticket, and rode from LA to NY. Longest bus ride in my life, and even though I was a young man back then, my legs hurt so bad afterwards. So when the video say's affordable housing isn't a problem, they are wrong. But the other problems are mental illness, which I met quite a few, drugs and alcohol use, and some people who just didn't want to leave the streets.
The biggest thing I remember was how bad it stunk - body odor, urine, and garbage all baked by the hot sun. And it turns out things just kept getting worse two decades later.
