USA Today: Six things to know about Lincoln Chafee

By Cooper Allen, Jun. 2, 2015, USA Today

Lincoln Chafee is set to join the Democratic presidential race Wednesday. Here are six things to know about the Rhode Islander:

Governor and senator

Chafee, 62, has held both of the top elective posts in his home state. In November 1999, Chafee was appointed to the U.S. Senate and then was elected to a full six-year term in 2000. After a brief hiatus from elective office, he was elected governor of Rhode Island in 2010. He served one term and opted not to run for re-election.

Family business

Lincoln Chafee followed in the footsteps of his father in Rhode Island politics. John Chafee served as governor in the 1960s and was elected to the Senate in 1976. He would serve there until his death in October 1999. Lincoln Chafee was appointed by then-governor Lincoln Almond to fill the remainder of his father’s term.
