Education Secy. Elisabeth Purvis |
Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and Democrats who control the legislature opened up a new front in their battle Thursday as the administration defended spending $250,000 from an agency struggling to fund programs for the poor to cover the salary of the education secretary.
The flap over the salary came shortly before the House orchestrated another vote aimed at embarrassing Rauner. While Speaker Michael Madigan called lawmakers back to the Capitol to take up his version of changes to the workers' compensation system, opponents argued the legislation did not reflect changes pushed by Rauner.
The day at the Capitol quickly devolved into a political sideshow underlining the deep divide that's led to a summer overtime session amid a budget stalemate in which Democrats want a tax increase Rauner says he won't consider without first winning portions of his legislative agenda.
