The Des Moines Register: Running for 2 offices could put Paul's Senate seat at risk

By Jennifer Jacobs, Apr. 16, 2015, The Des Moines Register

Rand Paul's decision to not give up his U.S. Senate seat to run for president leaves his seat at serious risk of falling into Democratic hands — which could then complicate the GOP's ability to maintain the U.S. Senate majority in 2016, some Kentucky Republicans say.

Kentucky law forbids a candidate from appearing on the ballot for more than one office.

Nonpartisan politics watchers agree that Paul's maneuvering to run for two offices simultaneously could could give Kentucky its first Democratic U.S. senator in 18 years — if Paul ends up being the GOP presidential nominee, that is.

"Republicans have legitimate concerns that they won't be able to hold onto the seat," said Josh Douglas, an election law expert at the University of Kentucky.
