Invoking America’s race to the moon in the 1960s, President Barack Obama called Tuesday for making America “the country that cures cancer once and for all” in his last State of the Union address.
Obama referenced a landmark bill crafted by southwest Michigan U.S. Rep. Fred Upton that will expedite federal review of new medical treatments and devices and infuse the National Institutes of Health with $8.7 billion for disease research. The omnibus budget approved in December increased NIH’s budget by $2 billion.
The Democratic president said the legislation and budget increases gives the NIH “the strongest resources they’ve had in over a decade.”
With Vice President Joe Biden sitting behind him, Obama said he’s tapping Biden to lead a new effort to focus the nation’s efforts to find a cure cancer during their final year in office.
