Reuters: Muhammad Ali, boxing great and cultural symbol, dies at 74
By Ricardo Ariz, Jun. 4, 2016, Reuters
Muhammad Ali, the former world heavyweight boxing champion whose record-setting career, flair for showmanship and political stands made him one of the best-known figures of the 20th century, died on Friday aged 74.
Ali, who had long suffered from Parkinson's syndrome which impaired his speech and made the once-graceful athlete almost a prisoner in his own body, died a day after he was admitted to a Phoenix-area hospital with a respiratory ailment.
Even so, Ali's youthful proclamation of himself as "the greatest" rang true until the end for the millions of people worldwide who admired him for his courage both inside and outside the ring.
Along with a fearsome reputation as a fighter, he spoke out against racism, war and religious intolerance, while projecting an unshakeable confidence and humor that became a model for African-Americans at the height of the civil rights era.

Reuters: Trump, Clinton win Arizona on big night in the West
By Steve Holland, Mar. 23, 2016, Reuters
U.S. Republican front-runner Donald Trump and Democratic favorite Hillary Clinton swept to victory in Arizona on Tuesday in contests that were overshadowed by deadly attacks in Brussels that raised security concerns in the United States.
Trump, who has riled establishment Republicans, easily defeated his two rivals for the Republican presidential nomination, U.S. Senator Ted Cruz of Texas and Ohio Governor John Kasich, U.S. television networks projected.
On the Democratic side, Clinton stretched her advantage in the Democratic contest by winning Arizona, routing U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont.
The contests in Arizona and Utah took place on the same day that attacks in Brussels killed at least 30 people, adding to Americans' concerns about the threat from Islamist militants.
"This is a time for America to lead, not cower," Clinton told supporters in Seattle in a victory speech she used to attack Trump and Cruz for views she said were out of step with most Americans.

OANN: Ex-Marine Chosen To Direct U.S. Extradition Efforts
By David Ingram, March 7, 2016, OANN/Reuters
(Reuters) – The U.S. Department of Justice has hired a retired Marine Corps major general to head the office in charge of bringing overseas criminal defendants to the United States for trial, a task that has grown in importance as the work of U.S. prosecutors increasingly crosses national borders.
Vaughn Ary, a lawyer who was in the Marine Corps for 28 years, has been chosen as director of the department’s Office of International Affairs, according to an internal personnel announcement seen by Reuters.
A Justice Department spokesman declined to comment on the appointment. Ary could not be reached for comment.
Ary resigned last year as the convening authority for U.S. military commissions, a job that put him in charge of operations at the Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, tribunals. He had angered some defense lawyers and military judges by pushing a plan to increase the pace of trials at the Guantanamo naval base by requiring judges to live there. The plan was scrapped.

Reuters: Vice President Joe Biden will not run for president
![]() |
| Reuters |
By Jeff Mason, Oct. 21, 2015, Reuters
Biden, who had been pondering a run since August, appeared in the White House Rose Garden with his wife Jill and President Barack Obama to say the window for mounting a successful campaign had closed.
"While I will not be a candidate, I will not be silent," Biden told reporters. "I intend to speak out clearly and forcefully to influence as much as I can where we stand as a party and where we need to go as a nation," Biden said.
Biden, 72, had been wrestling with his own doubts about whether he and his family were ready for a grueling campaign while still mourning his son Beau, who died of brain cancer in May. His son had urged him to run.

CBS: Why did Ted Cruz's PAC give half a million to Carly Fiorina's?
By Christina Ruffini, Oct. 1, 2015, CBS News/Reuters
The Federal Election Commission (FEC) has asked a Ted Cruz super PAC to explain why it gave $500,000 to another super PAC supporting one of his Republican rivals.
According to financial disclosures from June, Keep the Promise I - one of four separate committees backing Cruz - gave half a million dollars to CARLY for America, the political action committee supporting Carly Fiorina.
Super PACs are legally allowed to give money to other super PACs - they are only prohibited from donating directly to any political campaign. But it's unusual for one of these groups to give money to an opponent, especially when the candidate it supports is still in the race.
"Keep the Promise I made the donation in June to Ms. Fiorina at that time because we thought she had important things to say that weren't being heard, including her poignant and effective criticism of Mrs. Clinton, at the time, the likely Democratic nominee," Kellyanne Conway, president of Keep the Promise I told CBS News in an email.

ICYMI: Reuters: Syrian refugees top 3 million, half of all Syrians displaced: U.N.
![]() |
| Azad Lashkari/Reuters |
Three million Syrian refugees will have registered in neighboring countries as of Friday, but many remain trapped by the advance of Islamist militants or are having difficulty in reaching open border crossings, the United Nations said.
Syrians desperate to leave their war-engulfed homeland are forced to pay hefty bribes at armed checkpoints proliferating along Syria's borders, or to smugglers, the U.N. refugee agency said.
The record figure is one million refugees more than a year ago, while a further 6.5 million are displaced within Syria, meaning that "almost half of all Syrians have now been forced to abandon their homes and flee for their lives," it said.

Reuters: Greek PM to resign, seek snap election in September
By Renee Maltezou, Aug. 20, 2015
Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras will resign on Thursday to pave the way for early elections on Sept. 20, government officials said, hoping to quell a rebellion in his leftist Syriza party and seal support for a bailout program.
Tsipras's decision to return to the ballot box after seven bruising months in power deepens political uncertainty on the very day Greece began receiving funds under its third bailout program with foreign creditors.
But a snap election should allow Tsipras to capitalize on his popularity with Greek voters before the toughest parts of the program begin to bite, and may allow him to return to power in a stronger position without anti-bailout rebels in his radical left Syriza party to slow him down.
Greek two-year bond yields jumped 78 basis points to 12.15 percent, while Greek stocks closed down 3.5 percent.

Reuters: Ferguson state of emergency stands, 150 people arrested
By Carey Gillam and Scott Malone, Aug. 11, 2015, Reuters
About 150 people have been arrested during several days of protests around Ferguson, Missouri, where largely peaceful demonstrations over police shootings of unarmed black men have been punctuated by flashes of violence.
Police said on Tuesday that 22 people had been arrested overnight in Ferguson and another 63 were arrested for trying to block a highway.
On Monday, 57 people were arrested for passing barricades that blocked a federal court in St. Louis.
A state of emergency declared on Monday was still in effect for the Ferguson area, where protesters have been marching and staging acts of civil disobedience to mark the first anniversary of the shooting of unarmed black teenager Michael Brown by a white police officer.
Sunday night's rallies were marred by violence that included a drive-by shooting and several instances of rocks and bottles being hurled at police. A man accused of firing on police was shot and critically wounded.
After former Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson shot Brown a year ago in the city, where the population is predominantly black, a U.S. Justice Department investigation found systemic racial bias among Ferguson officials.

Reuters: California To Drop Appeal Of Court Ruling Allowing Felons To Vote
By Sharon Bernstein, Aug. 4, 2015, Reuters
California will drop its appeal of a court ruling allowing thousands of newly released felons to vote, an official said on Tuesday, the latest example of the success of a criminal justice reform movement that is gaining steam among Democrats as well as some Republicans.
The announcement by Alex Padilla, California's secretary of state, effectively extends voting rights to 73,000 former prisoners who had been released to the supervision of local probation departments under a program to reduce crowding in the state's massive prison system.
"If we are serious about slowing the revolving door at our jails and prisons, and serious about reducing recidivism, we need to engage - not shun - former-offenders," Padilla, a Los Angeles Democrat, said in remarks posted on his official website. "Voting is a key part of that engagement."
Padilla's move is part of a broader effort in the most populous U.S. state to reduce penalties for non-violent crimes and make it easier for former prisoners to integrate back into society. Last year, voters passed a referendum that reclassified numerous drug-related and other non-violent crimes as misdemeanors.

OANN/Reuters: Hillary Clinton To Call For Lifting Cuban Embargo
Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton this week will call on U.S. lawmakers to lift the long-standing economic embargo against Cuba, her campaign announced on Wednesday.
The former U.S. secretary of state will say on Friday during an appearance at Florida International University in Miami that “Republican arguments against increased engagement are part of failed policies of the past,” her campaign said.
President Barack Obama’s administration has formally restored diplomatic ties with the island nation and dropped Cuba from a list of state sponsors of terror.
But Congress has the authority to remove restrictions that prevent Americans from owning property in Cuba or traveling there freely. So far, it has not done so.
Before the Obama administration’s changes, Clinton had asserted the policy toward Cuba, in place for more than 50 years, was not working. She wrote in her memoir that she had urged Obama to move away from the tough stance.

Newsmax: 16 Reasons Donald Trump Is Not Wrong on Immigration
By Jim Meyers, Jul. 8, 2015, Newsmax/Reuters
Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump created a firestorm of controversy with his comments about Mexican illegal immigrants, asserting that they are "bringing drugs" and "crime" and include "rapists."
To date, his Miss Universe pageant has been cut from Univision and NBC, he's been severed permanently from his top-rated "Apprentice" show on NBC, and dropped from endorsement deals with Macy's, the Professional Golfers' Association, NASCAR, and even Serta mattresses.
He has also drawn criticism across the political spectrum, including from some of his GOP presidential rivals.
But there are compelling reasons why the outspoken billionaire businessman is on the right track with his views on illegal immigration:
1. The border is extremely porous: The United Nations reported that 97 percent of the illegal immigrants who enter the U.S. clandestinely do so across the nearly 2,000-mile Mexican border, but only 20 percent of those who cross illegally are caught.
2. Illegal immigrants do bring crime: Of the 61,529 criminal cases initiated by federal prosecutors in 2013, more than 40 percent were filed in court districts neighboring the border. Nearly 22 percent were drug-related, 19.7 percent were violent crimes, and 10.2 percent involved white-collar offenses.
3. Immigrants are killing Americans: According to the Center for Immigration Studies, 57 percent of the 76 fugitive murderers wanted by the FBI in 2009 were foreign-born. The Center also disclosed that in Maricopa County in Arizona, 22 percent of felons are illegal immigrants.
4. Illegal immigrants pose a danger on the roads: About 4.5 million illegal aliens in the U.S. drive on a regular basis, many without licenses or insurance or even the ability to read road signs written in English, The New York Times reported. In Arizona, 63 percent of cited drivers have no license, no insurance, and no registration for the vehicle, and 97 percent of them are illegal aliens. Of the 188,380 deportations of illegal aliens in one recent year, 23 percent had committed criminal traffic offenses, primarily driving under the influence. Rep. Steve King of Iowa has estimated that illegal alien drunk drivers kill 13 Americans every day.

OANN: Hoax Letter To Russian Media Seeks To Tie U.S. Senator To Ukraine
![]() |
| Flikr |
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – A forger sent a hoax letter to Russian media in an apparent bid to convince journalists that a senior U.S. lawmaker, Senator Richard Durbin, was trying to tell Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseny Yatsenyuk how to run his government, Durbin’s office said on Monday.
The hoaxer wrote to Yatsenyuk on what appeared to be U.S. Senate letterhead, claiming to be Durbin, the number two Democrat in the Senate, a leading American voice on Ukraine-related issues who traveled to Kiev in May to discuss Russian aggression.
Ben Marter, a spokesman for Durbin, said his office had told the CIA and the FBI about the letter. Marter said he first learned about it when he was contacted by Russian state-owned media asking for comment.
The forged letter was on paper that resembled U.S. Senate stationery, but with Durbin’s title wrong. The Illinois lawmaker is assistant Democratic leader, but the forged letter called him “Assistant Minority Leader.”

OANN: U.S. Lawmakers Warn Proposed Changes Could Doom Spy Bill
By Mark Hosenball and Patricia Zengerle, June 1, 2015, Reuters/OANN
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – High-ranking members of the U.S. House of Representatives warned the Senate on Monday that proposed changes to the USA Freedom Act, a bill reforming domestic surveillance, were unlikely to pass the House and might doom the contentious spy program.
The renewed tension between the two houses came a day after the Senate failed to pass legislation extending the legal authority for U.S. spy agencies’ collection of American’s phone records in time to keep the program from expiring.
While a lapse of only a few days is seen as having little effect on intelligence agencies’ capabilities, a legislative struggle is now looming over the Senate’s proposed amendments to the Freedom Act aimed at extending surveillance powers.

OANN: Data Thieves Gain Access To 100,000 U.S. Taxpayers’ Information: IRS
By Brendan Pierson, May 26, 2015, Reuters/OANN
(Reuters) – Tax return information for about 100,000 U.S. taxpayers was illegally accessed by cyber criminals over the past four months, U.S. IRS Commissioner John Koskinen said on Tuesday, the latest in a series of data thefts that have alarmed American consumers.
From February to May, attackers sought to gain access to personal tax information 200,000 times through the agency’s “Get Transcript” online application, which calls up information from previous returns, he told a news conference. About half of those attempts were successful.
The breach did not affect any IRS data outside the “Get Transcript” application, and the agency said it would strengthen its security measures.
Koskinen said he could not comment on who the attackers might be, and a criminal investigation was ongoing.
“We’re confident these are not amateurs. These are actually organized crime syndicates that not only we but everyone in the financial industry are dealing with,” Koskinen said.
The data theft was largely intended to steal taxpayers’ information to submit fraudulent returns next year, he said.

OANN: Rubio Says ‘We Don’t Have The Votes’ For Broad Immigration Bill
![]() |
| DIAZ / AP |
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Republican presidential contender Marco Rubio said on Sunday he still favors immigration reform, but he has accepted the need for a piece-by-piece legislative approach because “we don’t have the votes to pass” a comprehensive measure.
Rubio, a U.S. senator from Florida, said on “Fox News Sunday” there were fewer votes in Congress for comprehensive immigration reform now than two years ago, when he worked with Senate Democrats to help pass a comprehensive bill that included a path to citizenship for those in the country illegally.
That measure died in the House of Representatives amid conservative opposition. Rubio, who faced criticism from the right over his work on the Senate bill, now backs a piecemeal approach that would begin with border security.
“I still believe we need to do immigration reform,” said Rubio, the son of Cuban immigrants. “The problem is we can’t do it in one big piece of legislation. The votes aren’t there” in the House of Representatives.

Reuters: Republican hopefuls target middle-class insecurity as economy improves
By James Oliphant and Andy Sullivan, Apr. 19, 2015, Reuters
(Reuters) - Facing a recovering economy and a tumbling jobless rate, Republican presidential candidates honing their economic message are trying tap into a lingering sense of insecurity among Americans seven years after the global financial crisis.
And some are striking a sympathetic tone with lower-income workers in a way that contrasts with four years ago when Mitt Romney struggled to overcome perceptions that he was largely the candidate of the wealthiest Americans. Then, Republican nominee Romney had the luxury of being able to hammer President Barack Obama with an unemployment rate of more than 8 percent.
Now, with the jobless rate at 5.5 percent, the 18 Republican White House hopefuls who gathered this weekend in the key early primary state of New Hampshire faced the challenge of arguing the country needs new economic stewardship even as the worst of the downtown has passed.
